Lisa Jackson

Lisa Jackson I have over twenty years of business experience including computer hardware configuration, budgeting, marketing, accounting, finance, technical writing, courseware development, instructional design, process documentation, and editing, along with an MBA. I'm a multi-published professional writer and hold a master's degree in writing and literature.

My editing style encompasses the entire work, even if I'm only hired for line editing, I can't help but consider the entire piece once I've read through it. I do not change an author's voice, which means I fix only what is incorrect (typo, grammar, etc.). For any issues that fall into a gray area, awkward wording, incomplete sentences, etc., I highlight and comment with re-write suggestions that enable you to rewrite in your own words. I always meet or beat my deadlines and strive to give a little extra to each project. I'll mark up a manuscript/document and also send a comprehensive summary that gives my overall impressions, suggestions, and comments that didn't fit within the editing framework. You'll have a full picture of your piece—the good, bad, and mediocre—when you receive my feedback on any type of work.

More About Lisa

What I like most about editing: I really enjoy being a pair of fresh eyes on a manuscript to help writers see where something is left dangling, incomplete, missing, or has gotten confused.

My best advice to writers: Keep writing and be open to feedback. It's amazing how many ideas a writer can get by keeping an open mind.

My favorite genres to edit: I don't believe I have a favorite. I edit in all genres and my favorite story is the one that keeps pulling me to the next sentence.

Number of years I've been editing: 15+.

Edit hard copy or on-screen: Not to be troublesome, but I prefer *reading* hardcopy, only because I can carry it with me and mark the manuscript up any place, any time, but I definitely prefer *editing* on-screen in order to have the notes written in readable script and not running off the page.

My "must have" writing reference books: Merriam-Webster Dictionary.

Favorite background music when I edit: I generally edit in silence so I won't get distracted by lyrics.

Scene outside the window where I edit: Trees surrounding a parking lot.

Favorite quotes: "By your thoughts you are daily, even hourly, building your life; you are carving your destiny." —Ruth Barrick Golden

Memorable fictional character: Roarke of J.D. Robb's In Death series.

Most recent blog/website I bookmarked: Poe's Deadly Daughters.

Currently reading: On Writing by Stephen King.
